Zvezdelina Entcheva Stokova (Bulgarian: Zvezdelina Echeva Stankova; born 15 September 1969 in Bulgaria) is a professor of mathematics and a professor of mathematics at Mills College. She is also a teaching professor at University of California, Berkeley.

In 1998, she also founded the Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad. She was the coach for six years of the US International Mathematical Olympiad.

She worked at the University of California, Berkeley as Morrey Assistant Professor of Mathematics before joining the Mills College faculty in 1999, and continues to teach one course per year as a visiting professor at Berkeley. She also serves on the advisory board of the Proof School in San Francisco.

Since 2013, she has featured in several videos on the mathematics-themed YouTube channel “Numberphile”.

Stankova was a student at Bryn Mawr College. She received her bachelor’s and masters degrees in 1992. Rhonda Hughes served as a mentor. As an undergraduate, she was part of a summer research program at the University of Minnesota Duluth with Joseph Gallian, which sparked her interest in permutation patterns. She then went on to Harvard University to pursue doctoral studies. Stankova was born at Ruse in People’s Republic of Bulgaria. As a fifth-grader in Bulgaria, she began attending Ruse SMC math circle. That year, she also learned how to solve Rubik’s Cube. She also began winning regional mathematics competitions. Later, she wrote that if she hadn’t been a Ruse SMC member, “I wouldn’t be able make such profound achievements mathematically.” She was a student at an elite English language high school and competed in the International Mathematical Olympiads 1987 and 1988 with the Bulgarian team, winning silver medals each time. In 1989, she was accepted to Sofia University. However, the Iron Curtain was eroding and she was one of 15 students from Bulgaria selected to travel to the USA to finish her studies.

Stankova was awarded the Alice T. Schafer Prize by the Association for Women in Mathematics in 1992 for her undergraduate research in permutation pattern. She was one of two inaugural recipients of the Henry L. Alder award for distinguished teaching by a beginning college or university mathematics faculty member in 2004. Stankova was awarded the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo award for distinguished college or university teaching in 2011. This was given by the Mathematical Association of America “for her outstanding efforts in teaching, mentoring and inspiring students at all levels and in leading the creation of Math Circles and encouraging participation in math competitions”. She was the Frederick A. Rice Professor of Mathematics at Mills.

In 1998 she became the founder and director of the Berkeley Math Circle, an after-school mathematics enrichment program that Stankova modeled after her early experiences learning mathematics in Bulgaria. The Berkeley circle was only the second math circle in the US (after one in Boston); following its success, over 100 other circles have been created, and Stankova has assisted in the formation of many of them. With Tom Rike, she is co-editor of two books about her work with the Berkeley Math Circle, A Decade of the Berkeley Math Circle: The American Experience (Vol. I, 2008, Vol. II, 2014).
