The prosecution responded with another appeal on 19 May 1999 (regarding Article 2 not guilty verdict and length of sentence). Aleksovski was freed from 7 May 1999 to 9 February 2000, when the ICTY ordered him to re- arrest. On 24 March 2000, the ICTY’s Appeals Chamber reached a decision. The defense appeal against the conviction was denied. However, the prosecution appeal regarding the sentence and judgment was allowed. Aleksovski, according to the Appeals Chamber, was “the commander at the prison” and therefore the authority that could have prevented the crimes. He certainly shouldn’t have been involved in them. These factors should be considered when determining the appropriate sentence. Aleksovski was sentenced to seven years in prison.
On 22 September 2000, Aleksovski was transferred to Finland to serve the remainder of his seven-year prison sentence. Finland was one of the countries in agreement with the ICTY to enforce sentences. Aleksovski was released from prison a year later, on 14 November 2001.
During the Croat–Bosniak War (part of the 1992–95 Bosnian War) Aleksovski was the prison commander of Kaonik prison in Busovača municipality from January to May 1993.
Aleksovski appeared in court for the first time on 29 April 1997. He pleaded not guilty and denied all charges. The trial began on 6 January 1998, and ended on 23 March 1999. Aleksovski was not found guilty of violating article 2, but he was found guilty for violating article 3.

Zlatko aleksovski, a Bosnian Croat prison commander in the Bosnian War, was born 8 January 1960 and was sentenced to seven year imprisonment for illegal treatment of prisoners in Lasva Valley in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Aleksovski, who was taken into custody in Split by the Croatian authorities shortly after the conclusion of the Bosnian War in 1996, was transferred to The Hague, Netherlands, on 28 April 1997. Aleksovski was authorized by the Supreme Court of Croatia to be extradited to The Hague. However, he wasn’t actually transferred to The Hague until the United States pressured Croatia. Aleksovski was charged by the ICTY with violating two articles in the ICTY Statute. These were “on the basis both of individual criminal responsibility as well as superior criminal responsibility”. Article 7 of ICTY Statute. Aleksovski was accused of violating the following Articles in the ICTY Statute.
On 7 May 1999 Aleksovski was initially sentenced to imprisonment for two and a half years.
