Zhang was the subject of global attention during the 2003 Caltex Singapore Masters. He beat Ernie Els by one shot on the last hole to become China’s first European Tour winner. He also became the first Chinese golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings to reach the top 100. In 2004, he was invited to the Masters Tournament as the first mainland Chinese player to participate in the tournament. Many players felt that there were better Asian golfers than him, and he was criticized for not being invited to the Augusta tournament.

In 2009, while being invited to compete in the Omega European Masters in Crans-sur-Sierre Switzerland, Zhang met Stéphane Barras the local club pro, who later became his coach. In February 2010 Zhang and Stéphane opened a golf training center in Haigeng, Kunming in the province of Yunnan, (the Olympic training ground of China). In April 2010, Zhang regained his title at the PGA of China and in 2011 he finishing -13 and best Chinese at the China Open co- sanctioned with European Tour, OneAsia tour and Asian Tour.
Zhang has won five tournaments on Asian Tour. He also has the best end-of- season ranking of 2nd on Order of Merit. This was achieved in 2003. Zhang has won six times on China Tour where he was crowned the Order of Merit 2006.

Zhang was born in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. Zhang was soon hooked on the game when the first Chinese People’s Republic golf course opened in 1984. Zhang started his career as a caddie, winning the China Amateur Open Championship three more times, before becoming a professional golfer in 1994.
Zhang won several smaller tournaments in Asia during his early career. These were in China, Malaysia, and Thailand. Since 1997, he has been a major competitor on the Asian Tour. However, he has also been a regular player on the Japan Golf Tour. He has had limited success outside of Asia. He did win a tournament held in Canada in 2000.
Zhang was the first golfer from the People’s Republic of China to achieve substantial success on the international professional circuit. In January 2003 he became the first Chinese golfer to win on the European Tour, and the following year was the first to compete in the Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships.
