Zhang Jigang is one of the most popular and richest Choreographer who was born on December 25, 1958 in Shanxi, China. Zhang Jigang (simplified Chinese Zhang Ji Gang; traditional Chinese Zhang Ji Gang; pinyin Zhang Jigang) (born December 25, 1958), is a highly acclaimed Chinese choreographer. He was also a Lieutenant General in People’s Liberation Army. Before his promotion in 2006, he was the former director for the Song and Dance Ensemble of the People’s Liberation Army. Zhang Jigang is now the highest ranking non-combat military rank in China.

The most influential and famous production by Zhang Jigang. This piece features 21 dancers with hearing impairments, who create remarkable hand and arm positions by standing in perfect columns behind one another. The choreographed moves and perfectly timed dance moves create stunning images. It quickly became a national hit and a national treasure. The show was performed for the first time at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., in front of Bill Clinton, former President, and senior White House staff members, as well as spectators. It received rave reviews and was soon showcased around the globe in countries such as Australia, Japan and North Korea, Egypt and Turkey. It was performed in 2004 at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Paralympics held in Athens (see it here), and the Miss World 2004 pageant in Sanya in China. The original version of the video was filmed in 2005 during China’s Spring Festival on CCTV. It was then spread to the internet via sites like YouTube and Google Video. The videos have been viewed by hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, including Chinese and international viewers.

The program could be compared to that of the Idol series or Dancelife, with contestants vying to win a coveted prize in ballet, hip-hop, Latin, folk and Chinese classical dance. It was broadcast nationally every night from April 19 – 28th 2007 at 7:30pm on CCTV 3. Season 4 received the highest domestic ratings for the series ever, with an estimated national audience over 200 million viewers per episode.

It revolves around the life of a young man who seeks his fortune in Shanxi during the Tang Dynasty. Poison Dates includes a huge ensemble with over 200 dancers. It is franchised across China and has been received by soldout shows in over 100 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Taiyuan and Hong Kong. In early 2007, the show toured Japan and in December 2007 travelled to Taiwan.

Zhang’s career was prolific when he was asked to be the Choreographer of the Art Troupe in the PLA’s General Political Department. The troupe is the most well-known of its kind in China, representing the highest level of dance possible.

Zhang Jigang was born at Yuci, an ancient Chinese city in Shanxi Province. Zhong Ziwu (Cultural Revolution Dance) was an influence on Zhang Jigang as a young boy. At the Song and Dance Ensemble in Shanxi Province, Taiyuan, he began his formal dance training at age 12. He was a well-known choreographer for the Chinese government by the time he turned 17. He was awarded the highest national dance award, Quan Guo Wu Dao Da Sai in the 1980s (Chinese: Quan Guo Wu Dao Da Sai). Zhang Jigang was the first Shanxi Province resident to be awarded such an award. This launched his career to national stardom and put Shanxi Province in the entertainment spotlight. In 1988, he enrolled at Beijing Dance Academy and graduated with a choreography degree. Later, he would return to university to complete a Masters of Political Science.
