Demirkubuz quit high school and began working in a textile shop. After that, he was a street vendor for a while. He was 17 when the 1980 coup d’etat took place. He was held without trial for three year for alleged communist activities and torture. He was studying Communications Engineering at Istanbul University at the time. After graduating, he got involved in movie production. He started his own production company called “Mavi Film” after working as an assistant director. Demirkubuz is uncompromising and fiercely independent. He controls nearly every aspect of his films and makes no concessions to the prevailing trends.
In 1986, he was Zeki Okten’s assistant and he started his career in the film business. In 1994, he made “C Blok”, his first film. Because of his experience as an assistant, he was able manage his projects with very small budgets.
