Zeenat Aman was conceived in Bombay as Zeenat Khan on 19th November 1951. Scinda Vardhini Karavaste is her mother. Aman is the cousin and niece of actor Raza Murad. Her father, Amanullah Khan was related to the ruling family of Bhopal State. Her mother was Brahmin Maharashtrian, and her father was of Afghan descent. He was a scriptwriter for movies like Mughal-e-Azam, Pakeezah and Pakeezah. She often used the nom de plume “Aman” as her screen name. When she was young, her parents divorced. Aman lost her father at the age 13 years. Her mother married Heinz, a German man, and obtained German citizenship.

Aman was first known for her participation in beauty pageants. She won the Femina Miss India pageant in 1970. She won the Miss Asia Pacific International pageant. This was her first win as a Femina Miss India titleholder.

In 1974, Aman began the year starring as Sheetal in Manoj Kumar’s critically acclaimed film Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. She had been in more of an unconventional role, rather than playing the generic housewife role, she played an opportunist who deserts her jobless lover for a millionaire. The film had been declared a blockbuster, and was the highest-grossing film of the year. Soon, the son Cine Blitz magazine was launched, with the first issue having with Aman on its cover, which helped her career and further verified her credibility. Aman had starred in a few films alongside Dev Anand in the year, and following Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, she next starred in Prem Shastra starring alongside Anand and Bindu, and also starred alongside Anand in Ishq Ishq Ishq as well as appearing along with Shabana Azmi and Kabir Bedi. She then starred in the Shammi Kapoor directed film Manoranjan as Nisha, which had been panned by critics due to the abundance of prostitution, which at the time was considered taboo. Following this, Aman had been cast in the film Ajanabee as Rashmi, an ambitious girl who considers having an abortion in order to pursue a career, starring alongside Rajesh Khanna. The film was a major success, and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Aman began acting in 1970 after she won her pageants. She first appeared in The Evil Within with Dev Anand. It was a commercially unsuccessful film. In 1971, she appeared in a small role in O. P. Ralhan’s Hulchul. The same year, she also appeared in Hungama starring Vinod Khanna and Kishore Kumar. Both films failed at the box office and did not help Aman’s career. Aman was prepared to leave India after her films failed and was ready to travel to Malta with her stepfather and mother. Dev Anand approached Aman about starring in his movie. Zaheeda was offered the role of Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), but she declined it because she wanted the leading female role and found it too bold. Aman’s performance in “Dum Maro Dum” and her acting skills helped her make her acting debut. Her acting and performance in the film were praised and she was awarded the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award as well as the BFJA Award for Best Actress.
