Zakariyau Oseni Biography

Zakariyau Oseni is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on December 20, 1950 in Achi, Enugu State, Nigeria. Oseni was born on December 20, 1950. His father Malam Idrees Oboh Oseni, and his grandmother Madam Aishietu Oseni were his first formal Islamic and western educations. Oseni was the son of a Shaykh and had the rare opportunity to learn the basics of Arabic and Islamic studies from his father. Later, he attended the Primary School of Mid-West Regional government and obtained the Primary School Living Certificate Grade ‘A’ in 1963. He was then accepted into the Ansar Ud-Deen Secondary Modern School, where he received the Secondary Modern School Certificate. He was the first in his class in his previous studies but he couldn’t proceed to Grammar School because he was to study more in Arabic and Islamic Studies. In 1967, he returned to the El-Adabiyyah School for Studies Owo. He was promoted twice in the second year and maintained his “First Place” in class. In 1969, he completed the I’dadi (Intermediate Certificate) in Arabic and Islamic Studies and was then employed at the same school. Between January 1970 and August 1970, he served as a tutor at the El- Adabiyyah School for Arabic Studies, Owo, in the now defunct Western Region. He completed the Teacher’s Certificate Course of Arabic and Islamic Studies at University of Ibadan in June 1971. He enrolled in both the Ordinary and Advanced levels of the General Certificate Examination to prepare for his Bachelor program. He passed both with high marks. He was officially accepted into University academic life. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature in 1977 with First Class Honours. He was appointed as a graduate assistant in the Arabic Department at Bayero University Kano during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This was between September 1977 to July 1978. He was hired as an assistant lecturer in Arabic Studies at the University of Ilorin, just two months after completing his NYSC program. He enrolled in the University of Ibadan’s Masters program in Arabic and Islamic Studies in 1979. He completed it on 30 September 1980. He enrolled in the University of Ibadan’s doctoral program in Arabic language, literature and culture in 1981. His specialization was in Arabic Literary History and Textual Criticism of Early Islamic and Umayyad Poetry. His doctoral program was completed in July 1984, a few months after Malam Idrees Oboh’s death.

Prof. Oseni is a leading scholar of Arabic literature in West Africa. In 1994, he published the first Arabic play entitled al-‘Amid al-Mubajjal (“The Honourable Dean”) The play has been published in several editions. Prof. Oseni also published two additional Plays, Al-Tajir wa Sahib al-Mat’am (“The Trader and the Owner at the Restaurant”) (2005) and Al-Tabaqat al-Ulya (2007). Many young scholars of Arabic literature and language are becoming more interested in Arabic drama thanks to Prof. Oseni’s leadership role. This can be seen in the increase in Arabic plays published in Nigeria and elsewhere. He delivered the 53rd University of Ilorin inaugural lecture on Prose, Drama and Nigerian Literature in Arabic. Audiences from all over the world attended the 53-page lecture. Prof. Oseni has also published a collection of stories in Arabic Qisas Khatt Al-Istiwa’I (The Equatorial Line Stories).

His book, AI-Ma’dubat al–Adabiyyah li–tullab al­cArabiyah fi ifriqiya al–Gharbiyyah (A Literary banquet for Arabic Students of West Africa) is another major contribution to Arabic literature. Since its original publication in 2000, several editions and printed versions of this book were released. His most recent publication is about Arabic literature in general. It’s a book called Al-Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf Al-Thaqafi, A Formidable Umayyad viceroy in Iraq (2011). A.S. Noordeen Publishers, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, published the book and it has been well received by a large readership around the globe.

Zakariyau Oboh Oseni (born 20 Dec 1950) is an Imam, a prominent scholar of Arabic and Islamic Studies, and a poet from Nigeria. He received a Certificate of Arabic & Islamic Studies (1971), and a B.A. at the University of Ibadan. A. First Class Hons. In Arabic Language and Literature (1977), Master’s Degree in Arabic & Islamic Studies (1980), and PhD. in Arabic Language & Literature (1984). His experience as a lecturer in Arabic Studies and other aspects of Islamic Studies is more than 33 years. There are over 100 publications in Arabic and Islamic Studies and Literature, including three collections of English poems, three plays and short stories in Arabic. He also has a collection with Afenmai Proverbs that have been translated and annotated. He serves as an editor consultant for fifteen academic journals in Nigeria, and elsewhere. He was Head of the multidisciplinary Department of Religions (1997-1999), and the Department of Arabic (2008)-2009, University of Ilorin. From October 2011 to October 2012, he was a visiting professor and head of the Department of Languages at Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin. From 2009 to 2011, he was also the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at University of Ilorin. He is currently Head of the Department of Arabic at University of Ilorin. He is also the Chief Imam of Auchi and Waziri. He is also a Fellow of Arabic Studies, Nigeria, Fellow of Academy of Religion (FAR), and a member of the Consultative Committee of ‘Ulama,’ which is part of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. He is happily married and has children.

Professor Oseni is a well-known English poet, in addition to his Arabic and Islamic Studies scholarship. Since 1973, he has been writing English poems. Three collections of poetry were published because of his rare poetic genius. Sparks in the Dark, the first collection, was published in 2001. The Silver Lining, the second collection, was published in 2004. The Silver Lining was the second collection. The third collection, The Silver Lining, was published in 2011. The fourth collection, The Superb, Graceful Mama, and Other Poems, was published in 2015. He also published a collection Afenmai Proverbs that he translated and annotated.

As a son of one of the then leading Islamic scholars in Auchi city, Prof. Oseni has been exposed to both traditional and modern methods of learning Arabic and Islamic studies at an early age as his father, the late Mallam Oboh, taught Arabic and Islamic studies to the local mallams at his residence. Oseni was appointed and turbaned as the Chief Imam of Auchi by the Otaru of Auchi on Friday, 24 August 2007. About five years before that, he was installed as the Waziri of Auchi (the prime advisor to the Auchi Monarch), by His Royal Highness, Alhaji Aliru Momoh, the otaru of Auchi. The turbaning ceremony took place on 7 December 2003. At present, he is the Chief Imam and Waziri of Auchi.
