Zaid Ibrahim & Co. was appointed as Minister. He resigned all of his positions and renounced his shares. Nik Norzul Thani was appointed his replacement as chairman. He stated that the firm was working on a succession plan they had drafted after Zaid’s 2004 election.
After criticising the arrests of three prominent individuals—Democratic Action Party MP Teresa Kok, blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng—under the Internal Security Act, Zaid resigned from the Cabinet on 15 September 2008.
Zaid succeeded Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, who had previously held the portfolio, but as of 2008 continues to be a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department tasked with parliamentary affairs. Zaid was also appointed as senator to the Dewan Negara on 18 March so he could take up his Cabinet posting. His appointment was greeted by The Economist as the “most promising” in the new Cabinet.
He joined UMNO in 2000 and became Kota Bharu UMNO Division chief a year later. Later, he was suspended and became Kelantan Umno deputy chief liaison chief two more years later. Zaid ran for and won the Kota Bharu Parliamentary seat in 2004’s general election. In 2008, however, UMNO dropped Zaid as a candidate. Zaid described it as one of his three main goals. “In the eyes the world, our judiciary has been weakened by the judicial crisis,” he said. He rejected the idea of reviewing it: “I’m not suggesting that the case be reopened. It is clear that the previous administration committed serious transgressions, and that this is obvious to all.
