After that, she began an Honours Business Degree in Sport and Exercise. She is currently working on a research PhD in primary school health promotion intervention. She was the captain of the CIT women’s field hockey team at the Chilean Cup intervarsity tournament. She captained CIT in 2012 as they won Chilean Plate.

O’Byrne represented Ireland at the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup and was a prominent member of the team that won the silver medal. She featured in all of Ireland’s games throughout the tournament, including the pool games against the United States, India, and England, the quarter-final against India, the semi-final against Spain and the final against the Netherlands.

O’Byrne started playing for Cork Harlequins in 2008. Cliodhna, a former Mount Mercy student and international women’s hockey player from Ireland, encouraged her to join the club. Sargent was at the time playing for Harlequins, and also coaching Mount Mercy. O’Byrne was just 19 when she took over the captaincy of the team. Cork Harlequins won the Munster Senior League Division 1 titles, in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively. The club was runners-up in the 2009-10 Women’s Irish Hockey League. She was the Cork Harlequins captain in 2016-17, when they reached the final of the Irish Senior Cup. Roisin Upton, Naomi Carroll and Naomi Carroll were also part of the team. When Harlequins were runners-up in the Women’s Irish Hockey League in 2017-18, she was again the captain.

O’Byrne was the Munster Under-16, 18 and 21 captains between 2006 and 2013. In 2011, she was part of the Munster senior team that won the Senior Interprovincial tourney. She was named Munster’s Under-18 Player of Year in 2010 and Munster’s Under-21 Player Of The Year in 2012.
