Hijgenaar, a former speed skater, was a member of the Netherlands national team for two years. After discovering she could ride better than she skated, Hijgenaar switched to track cycling in 2001. She stayed in cycling permanently after her skating colleagues made more technical advancements than she could.
Hijgenaar represented Netherlands at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Athens. She participated in both the individual sprint and the 500m time trial. In the individual sprint, she came 11th. She was fifth for the 500m time trial, which took her 34.532 seconds (52.125 km/h), and she placed fifth.
Hijgenaar won her fourth World Championship medal on 28 March 2009, taking the bronze medal in the Omnium, the first time the competition had been included for women in the World Championships. She was on equal points with Tara Whitten of Canada but missed out on that medal despite winning the 200 m flying start time trial and 500 m time trial events in the omnium.
