Yvon Riemer, a French Greco-Roman wrestler who was born on 5 October 1970, is a former champ. He won gold in 1995 at the World Championships and was also a medalist at the 1992 Olympics. In 2000, he competed as a welterweight (-74 kg and -76 km), and finished in 15th and 5th, respectively. He was also a three-time French national champion (1990-1994, 2001).

After missing the European Championships due to injury, he became the world champion when he defeated Bakhtiar Bakhtiar Bakhtiar Bakhtiar Bakhtiar Bakhtiar by points in the finals at Prague’s -74kg. For the first time, he also defeated Iskandaryan. 1996 was a year of back injuries. He was 7th at the European championships and was unable to compete at either the Worlds nor the Olympics. In 1997, he made a triumphant return to the sport by scoring another gold at the 1997 Mediterranean Games. He also finished third in Europe. He was just able to make it to the podium at World Championships. However, he lost to Cuban Filiberto Acuy by points in a battle for bronze.

He retired in 2001 and became a coach for the French national wrestling team.

He was born in Strasbourg to a wrestling family. In 1980, Jean-Pierre began training him as a wrestler. He won 11 European and three national youth championships (Greco Roman and freestyle) between 1985 and 1990. At the 1989 World Espoir (under-20s) Championships in Budapest Riemer won his first international medal in the Greco Roman -74kg category.

Athens’ 1991 Mediterranean Games, where he was a welterweight, marked his international senior debut. He also won bronze at the World Championships held in Varna that year. Mnatsakan, the tournament’s winner, would become his most formidable rival in international competitions. He was selected to represent his country in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. The 21-year old placed 5th in a -74kg category. Iskandaryan eliminated him. He was awarded silver at the 1992 European Championships. In the final, he lost to Iskandaryan. His highest point of success was a bronze medal at the 1993 World Championships. In 1994, a combination of injury and lack of training resulted in him finishing 16th at the European championships and 12th at the World championships.

His last major success was a silver medal at the 1999 World Championships in Athens, where he lost 11:0 in 2 minutes and 41 seconds to Nazmi Avluca in the finals. The deciding factor was when Avluca threw Riemer over his shoulder 13 seconds into the match, earning 8 points, and taking advantage of Riemer’s history of shoulder injuries. He failed to medal at the 1998 or 2001 Worlds, finishing 27th and 23rd, respectively. He also made one last effort at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, losing both of his matches and finishing 15th.
