Dumont was elected to the Order of Manitoba 2001. In 2003, he ran for the MMF leadership again but was defeated in the election by David Chartrand.
Dumont was also a St. Laurent municipal councillor and a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba. In 1993, he was awarded the Manitoba Metis Federation Award. In 1996, he received the National Aboriginal Achievement Award (now known as Indspire Awards).

In 1967, he became involved with the Manitoba Metis Federation and was appointed its Director for the Interlake area in 1972. In 1973, he was elected Executive Vice-President and served as the Federation’s President from 1994 to 1993.
Dumont was also a founding member of Canada’s Native Council in 1972 and President of Canada’s Metis National Council between 1988 and 1993. Dumont has participated in Canadian First Ministers’ conferences as a representative for the MMF and was active in constitutional discussions about Canada’s Metis and aboriginal peoples. Dumont opposed the integration of Metis services in larger aboriginal institutions and expressed concern about Metis uniqueness being lost.
