He began to paint at the age of 18, alternating between studio work and long periods of painting in France, La Verne charterhouse, or outside in Andalusia. These stays were a major influence on his work. In 1982, he exhibited in Brussels for the first time.
Yves Zurstrassen’s paintings are a work that is always in motion. They move between abstract expressionism and lyrical abstraction. His method is based on the principle of collage and “decollage”, which involves successive layers of colour, using different types of thin papers.
He was a self-taught artist and had a background in graphic arts training. He learned his art in the 1980s in the studios and retrospectives on the masters of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly, which were opposed to the French idea of the death and destruction of painting. Zurstrassen intentionally focused on the rectangle of the painting with no stretchers, canvas, paper or paint to allow for new freedom of expression.

He settled down in an abandoned industrial building at the end of the 1990s, where he continued his studies and worked. His approach to art evolved in the 2000s, inspired by Kurt Schwitters’ Dada movement. He started with small format studies, but later switched to collages of cut-out newsprint that were then removed and incorporated into the image. He claims that he sees the image through the memories of it. These collages are made from photographs he has taken in public spaces, urban motifs, or details from everyday life. He digitally reworks them, such as the massive (94 m) piece that was installed at the Gare de L’Ouest [Brussels West Station] in Brussels. At the beginning of 2010, the cut-out motifs that were originally placed on the surface, but now completely cover, are the 2010 decade.
