Yury Valentinovich Kolchuk (Russian: Iurii Vladimirovich Kovalchuk, 25 July 1951) was a Russian billionaire financier and businessman who is “reputedly Vladimir Putin’s personal banker”. Russian Forbes published him in the May 2008 issue. It called him and Gennady Timchenko “good friends of Vladimir Putin”. He was ranked 53rd on the Russians-only Forbes list with an estimated fortune $1.9 billion. This dropped to $650million after the 2018 sanctions were imposed on Kovalchuk.
Yury Kovalchuk’s National Media Group, (NMG), and the US Discovery channel joined forces in 2015 to create Media Alliance. NMG holds 80%. Kovalchuk later acquired Ted Turner’s Russian assets, including Boomerang, Cartoon Network, and CNN. Russian media ownership laws that limit foreign ownership of Russian media media led to the sale.
Kovalchuk is a known friend of Putin’ he hosted the wedding of Putin’s daughter Katerina Tikhonova to Kirill Shamalov at his wholly owned ski resort, Igora, in 2013.
