Russian American historian Yuri Georgievich Felshtinsky, Russian: Iurii Georgievich Felshtinskii, was born 7 September 1956 in Moscow. Felshtinsky is the author of several books about Russian history including The Bolsheviks, the Left SRs (Paris 1985), Towards a History of Our Isolation(London, 1988), Moscow, 1991), The Failure of the World Revolution (1991), Moscow 1992), Blowing up Russia (with Alexander Litvinenko) and The Age of Assassins with Vladimir Pribylovsky.

Mikhail Trepashkin, an investigator, stated that “everyone involved in the publication book Blowing Up Russia would be killed”, and that three FSB agents had traveled to Boston to plan the assassination. Felshinsky suggested Berezovsky be killed after the death of Boris Berezovsky (exiled oligarch) who sponsored the book.

Felshtinsky lost his parents when he was just 17 years old. In 1974, he began history studies at Moscow State Pedagogical University. He decided to emigrate from Israel to the Soviet Union a few years later, first going to Vienna. Instead of traveling from Vienna to Israel, he decided to go further to the United States. He arrived there in April 1978 and continued his studies. He received his degree from Brandeis University, and then earned his PhD in history at Rutgers University. He returned to Moscow in 1993 to defend his Doctor of Science thesis, the Institute of Russian History of Russian Academy of Sciences. This was the first Russian citizen to receive a doctorate from an Russian university.

In 1998, Felshtinsky returned to Moscow to study contemporary Russian politics. Alexander Litvinenko (a lieutenant colonel in the Federal Security Service) was Felshtinsky’s first acquaintance. Felshtinsky began work on Blowing up Russia in 2000. This book describes the gradual appropriation in Russia of power by the security apparatus. It also details the involvement of the FSB in a series terrorist acts that occurred between 1994 and 1999. A special edition of Novaya Gazeta published several chapters from Blowing up Russia in August 2001. The book was used as the basis of a documentary film called Blowing Up Russia, also known as Assassination Of Russia. The Russian government banned both the book and documentary for “divulging state secret”. Felshtinsky and Litvinenko worked together on additional documents that documented the involvement of the FSB in the September 1999 apartment house bombings.
