Barsukova was married to Denis Samokhin. He is a former Russian ice dancer. Their son Nikita was born in 2008.

After her appearance in major competitions as a second Russian member, Barsukova won numerous rhythmic gymnastics titles. After a hoop fumble from Alina Kabaeva, then World champion in 2000, she won gold in hoop at Glasgow’s 2000 World Cup Final. She was the 2000 European All around bronze medalist, and she won the rope final at 9.983. She was 21 years, 8 months, and 27 days old, and she was the Olympic rhythmic gymnastics champion. However, Evgenia Kanaeva, a fellow Russian, won her second Olympic gold medal at London 2012.

After the coaching change, Barsukova started competing in international competitions. She competed for six years under the guidance of Amina Zaripova and Yanina Batyrchina (Russian gymnasts), before moving to Alina Kabaeva.
