Yuan Quan was raised in Hui-Han families. In 2009, ten years after they first met as Central Academy of Drama students, she married actor Xia. They appeared together in four films: The Law of Romance (2003, Waiting Alone (2004) and Shanghai Rumba (2006). Yuan Quan also played Xia Yu, a character in Pretty Big Feet (2002). Their daughter was born 31 March 2010.
In 2017, Yuan co-starred in The First Half of My Life, a drama that tells the inspirational story of a housewife-turned-career woman. The drama was a huge hit in China.
Yuan was also the protagonist in the National Center for the Performing Arts’ drama Jane Eyre. The Beijing News conducted a poll of the audience and found that 90% believed Yuan’s Jane accurately portrayed the novel’s character. Yuan was praised for her performance, with 90% saying that she conveyed the character’s calm, introverted, and persistent personality. Yuan starred as Yuan in Rhapsody of Spring (1998). This film won her the Golden Rooster Award, Best Supporting Actress. She won awards for her subsequent films, including Once Upon a Time in Shanghai (1998) which earned her a nomination at the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actress. A Love of Blueness (2000) earned her the Best Actress trophy from the Beijing College Student Film Festival. It was a huge success, and she performed in seven Asian cities. She starred in Secret Love In Peach Blossom Country by Stan Lai in 2006. It won critical acclaim, and was named “Best Stage Drama 2006”. Yuan was introduced to Yao Qian, a famous Taiwanese musician. This led to Yuan Quan starting a musical career. Yuan’s first album, The Lonely Flower, was released in 2007.
2014 was a successful year for Yuan, who starred in two top-grossing films Breakup Buddies and The Continent.
