Yu Youjun is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 28, 1953 in Feng County, JiangsuXuzhou, China. Yu was placed on probation and was deprived of many rights as a senior member of the party, including the right vote for party representatives. He also lost the right to run for office. According to party rules, Yu could be reinstated as a full member if he shows “remorse.” This was his only treatment by the 17th Central Committee, leading to widespread suspicion that his removal was political motivated. Yu wrote two books during his probation. One was about Chinese history 1919-1965, and the other, The 500 Year History of Socialism. They were very well received and won several state awards.

Yu rose to prominence in 1999 as the Mayor of Shenzhen (China’s first and most successful Special Economic Zone (SEZ)). This was between 1999-2003. An 18,000-character essay entitled “Shenzhen who has abandoned me?” was published in November 2002. A netizen called Crazy for her (woweiyikuang), published an 18,000-character essay titled “Shenzhen, who has abandoned you?”. It attracted considerable attention for its thorough and detailed examination of public policies related to the SEZ as well as the implications of expanding them to other areas of the country. Mayor Yu met Guo Zhongxiao (Kuai Zhong Xiao ), the author of the essay, on January 19, 2003 to discuss the essay and exchange opinions on Shenzhen’s development. His actions were hailed by various media outlets as a major step forward in improving communication and dialogue between high-ranking officials and Internet users.

As part of a wider Party reshuffle in preparation for the formation of the new Cabinet in 2008, Yu resigned his party and government positions in Shanxi in September and October 2007 respectively. He was then appointed the party secretary and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture. Yu was chosen as a member of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 2007,

In October 2008, Yu was unexpectedly removed from the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and his party membership was put on probation for two years, a disciplinary measure that is considered to be just short of expulsion. He eventually re-joined government as a deputy director of the Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of the State Council. He retired in 2015 and joined the faculty of his alma mater, Sun Yat-Sen University as a full-time professor.

In June 2003, Yu was promoted to vice governor of Hunan province as well as deputy secretary of Hunan Provincial Party Committee. He was again promoted to governor of Shanxi, a coal-rich province. He was instrumental in several important initiatives, including closing several thousand illegal coal mines. Yu was also known for his ability to attract investment to the province. This was responsible for the rapid economic growth of the province. After the 2007 Chinese slave scandal, Yu was brought to international attention by migrant workers and children who were forced into working in Shanxi province’s kilns. The mishap was publicly apologised for and he offered self-criticism, something that is almost unheard of in Chinese politics. Yu was resigned from his position as governor in September 2007 and was replaced by Meng Xuenong.
