Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on August 15, 1975 in Fuji, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi (Chuan Kou Neng Huo, Kawaguchi Yoshikatsu; born 15 August 1975) is an ex-Japan football goalkeeper. He was a former captain for the Japan national football team.
He was ruled out of the 2010 World Cup due to a broken leg in the J1 League match against Kyoto Sanga FC. After a quick recovery, Takeshi Okada, the Japanese head coach decided to include him on the final squad announced in May 2010. Kawaguchi was among two Japanese players (the second being Seigo Narazaki), who were named for Japan’s fourth consecutive World Cup. Okada chose Kawaguchi despite his inactivity and his fall to third place in the pecking list in order that his leadership skills and experience would help the team. During team training, Kawaguchi became the captain of the national team on 21 May 2010.
Following impressive performances for both club and country, he moved to English club Portsmouth, signing for a club record £1.8m. However, he struggled to adapt to life in the English Football League, and struggled with the physical side of the First Division, notably in a 3–1 away defeat to Grimsby Town. Kawaguchi lost his place to veteran Dave Beasant after being held responsible for Portsmouth’s 4–1 home defeat to underdogs Leyton Orient in the FA Cup. Despite his poor performances for Pompey he remained something of a cult hero with the fans, on account of his cheerful demeanour, and his insistence that he would work hard to regain his place. After a season of playing reserve team football, he made his final appearance for Portsmouth in the final game of the 2002–03 Football League First Division championship winning season, coming on at half time to a standing ovation in the 5–0 win against Bradford City. Despite this brief reappearance, he realised that his future lay elsewhere, and moved on to Nordsjælland of the Danish league. Prior to the 2005 Japanese football season, Kawaguchi returned to his home country when he signed with then-perennial title-contenders Júbilo Iwata.
It was announced that Kawaguchi would be wearing the captain’s armsband in August 2006. Ivica Osim, new Japan manager, believed that Tsuneyasu Mikamoto wasn’t getting enough time at Gamba Osaka, his home club. Kawaguchi is the country’s most-capped goalkeeper, and third overall most-capped player. He has 116 caps for Japan. This puts him six behind second-placed MasamiIhara, who has 122 caps. However, a knee injury prevented him from playing. Seigo Narazaki, a long-time rival, had been playing as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper since then.
