Koizumi was born April 29, 1968 in Mishima (Shizuoka). At 21 years old, he played Super Mario Bros. 2 on a borrowed Family Computer console from a friend. Koizumi graduated from Osaka University of Arts’ Visual Concept Planning Department. He studied film, animation, drama, and, in a lesser degree, storyboarding. Koizumi originally wanted to be a film director, but he applied to Nintendo to create a type of drama that is only possible in video games. His university’s proximity also played a part in his decision.

Koizumi was the director of Super Mario Galaxy. He also helped to create the story and decided on the inclusion in the book a fairytale that told the characters’ backstory. He was promoted to producer, and became the manager of Tokyo Software Development Group No. 2 in the company’s Entertainment Analysis & Development Division. He was appointed Deputy General Manager for the Entertainment Planning & Development Division in September 2015. Koizumi was also the General Producer for Nintendo’s 2017 videogame console, the Nintendo Switch. Satoru Iwata was also his successor as international host for the Nintendo Direct video presentations. He has been doing this since the Nintendo Switch Presentation on January 12, 2017.

Koizumi is also a director on the Nintendo subsidiary 1-UP Studio’s board of directors since 2013.

Yoshiaki Koizumi, also known as Xiao Quan Huan Huang / Koizumi Yoshiaki (born April 29, 1968) was a Japanese producer, designer, and director of video games. He is currently the Deputy General Manager for the Entertainment Planning & Development Division of Nintendo. He is also a senior executive officer on the Nintendo board of directors. His work in The Legend of Zelda and Mario is his most well-known.

Koizumi joined Nintendo in April 1991. He was then assigned to the manual for the action-adventure The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past. For which he did the layout, art and writing. He also created the backstory for the game and the designs for the three goddesses as well as the star sign. He was again tasked to design the manual for the sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Koizumi was still working on the game’s story, so he came up with ideas for plots, such as an island in a dream. Koizumi also designed the bosses’ behavior patterns and wrote the lines for the Wind Fish and the Owl. Later, Koizumi experimented with a side-scrolling polygonal remake of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The prototype was developed for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and was inspired by chanbara action (a Japanese form of sword fighting). Koizumi, who was also an assistant director for Super Mario 64, animated the 3D models. He also worked with Shigeru Miyamoto on Mario’s swimming moves.
