Peking University awarded Yonggang Huang a BS in mechanics in 1984. In 1986, he moved to the United States to pursue engineering science studies. He received his ScM (and later, PhD) degrees in engineering science at Harvard University in 1987, 1990 and 1990 respectively. After a year at Harvard, he was appointed a postdoctoral fellow and then joined the University of Arizona in 1991 as an assistant professor. In 1995, he was promoted to Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) as an associate professor. He then moved to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998. In 2001, he was promoted to full professor, Grayce Wicall Gauthier Professor 2003, and Shao Le Soo Professor 2004 at UIUC. He was the Joseph Cummings Professor at Northwestern University in 2007 and the Walter P. Murphy Professor from 2015.

Yonggang Huang was awarded many awards for his work in mechanical engineering and mechanics, including the Larson Award (2003) and Melville Medal (2004), Richards Award (2010) and Drucker Medal (2013). He also received the Thurston Lecture Award (2019), from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a highly cited researcher in Engineering (2009), Materials Science and Engineering (2014), and Physics (2018). He was awarded the honorary professorship from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He is a member of US National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of Academia Europeea. His awards for undergraduate teaching and advising include: The Most Supportive Junior Faculty Member of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona in 1993; on the list of “Teachers Ranked As Excellent by Their Students in Spring 2003, Fall 2005, Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign”; the Engineering Council Award of Excellence in Advising at the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in 2007; the Cole-Higgins Award of Engineering at Northwestern University; and the Honor Roll of the University’s, 2018, 2018-2019.

Huang is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Mechanics (Transactions of ASME), and has transformed the journal to be the fastest one in mechanics. For example, among all papers submitted in 2017, the average time from submission to final decision (i.e., reject or accept) is less than 16 days, which include the time for review and the time for the authors’ revision (if needed).
