He is the coach for the Indonesian Physics Team For The Olympiad (TOFI). Under his leadership, the Indonesian team won 54 gold medals and 33 silver medals and 42 bronze medals in various international science and Physics competitions. His ‘fun and practical physics’ training program is what made him famous. He is the author of 68 books as well as the comic Archi & Meidy.
In 2013, Yohanes Surya also founded Surya University, the first private university that is research-based in Indonesia. Its vision is “Prosperous Indonesia 2030”. Surya University employs hundreds of PhD researchers and lecturers. Surya University also has hundreds of multidisciplinary research centres that involve undergraduate students in their research from freshmen year.
Yohanes Surya, a visionary who had the vision to transform Indonesia with 30 000 PhD’s in science and tech, was able to create Surya Institute in 2006. He also has the mission of reforming Science and Math education in Indonesia. Simultaneously Prof. Surya and the Surya Institute Team, which now includes the Indonesian Society for the Promotion of Science, the Math and Science Olympiad Training Center and Surya College of Education, (STKIP Surya), also trained students from remote parts of Indonesia and have helped them win in international science competitions.

Yohanes Surya, the seventh child of nine children, is the son of a traditional cookie seller mother and a retired soldier father. Surya has three brothers and five sisters. Surya spent his elementary school in SD Pulogadung Petang II, East Jakarta. He went on to school at SMPN 90 and SMAN 12 Jakarta. He was not able to go to university because his parents couldn’t afford it. However, with the support of his older siblings, he was allowed to enroll in Physics at School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University of Indonesia. He graduated in 1986 with his bachelor’s degree and continued to study at College of William and Mary in Virginia, USA for his master and doctorate degrees.
Surya was a theoretical physics consultant for the TJNAF/CEBAF, Virginia, USA, after he completed his doctoral program. Surya, a USA greencard holder decided to return to Indonesia to further develop physics as an academic discipline. In 1993, Surya was appointed the leader of the Indonesian Physics Olympiad Team Training Center (TOFI), which trains participants for the Physics Olympiad. He also became a researcher and lecturer in the University of Indonesia’s postgraduate program in nuclear physics.
