Yevgeny Shevchuk is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 19, 1968 in Rîbnița, Moldova. Yevgeny Vasilyevich Shevchuk (Russian: Evgenii Vasil’evich Shevchuk , tr. Yevgeniy Vasilyevich Shevchuk, Ukrainian: Ievgen Vasil’ovich Shevchuk , tr. Yevhen Vasylovych Shevchuk (Moldovan Cyrillic, Evgenii Vasil’evichi Shevchuk), Romanian: Evgheni Vasil’evichi Sevciuk, was the 2nd President the internationally unknown Pridnestrovian Moldovan republic, also known as Transnistria. From 2000 to his election as president, he was the deputy of Transnistria’s Supreme Soviet. He was also the speaker of the Supreme Soviet of Transnistria from 2000 to 2009 and the leader for the opposition party Renewal up until 2010. Shevchuk is an ethnic Ukrainian citizen and Transnistria-Russian citizen.

Shevchuk was elected President of Transnistria in December 2011. He was elected president of Transnistria in the first round of presidential elections, with a higher turnout than either Igor Smirnov (the current president) or Anatoliy Kaminski (the Kremlin-backed Supreme Soviet Chairman). On 25 December, he won the second round with more than 75% support. He was inaugurated at the end of December 2011.

On 28 June 2017, the parliament of Transnistria voted to remove Shevchuk’s immunity from prosecution in connection with five pending criminal cases against the former President. Prior to this, on the evening of 27 June, Shevchuk crossed the border into Moldova. Shevchuk claimed that he crossed from PMR to Moldova in a taxi, whilst Russian-language media and certain PMR officials reported that he sailed across the Dnestr in a boat. On 30 June, Moldovan officials stated that they would not hand Shevchuk over to Transnistria.

Shevchuk, the speaker of parliament, resigned on 22 July 2009. Anatoliy Kaminski was Shevchuk’s vice-speaker and vice chairman of Shevchuk’s Renewal party. He was the only candidate to succeed him. Mikhail Burla was the leader of Renewal, and chairman of the Committee for economic, budget, and finance. He was elected the new vice-speaker. Shevchuk stated that the reason for his resignation was a controversial attempt by President Igor Smirnov to amend the county’s constitution.

The 2005 Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe reported on Shevchuk within the context of democratic Reform. It noted that Transnistria was moving towards more pluralism and highlighted the Transnistrian parliament’s initiatives to reform the political system. These were led by Shevchuk’s block. The European Parliament expelled Shevchuk’s entry from the EU countries.

He was part of the minority opposition to parliament in December 2005 and led a reform drive for his party to change Transnistria’s electoral codes. The changes included a requirement that only technical qualifications be used to select polling station chairmen, and a ban on state-owned media outlets (radios, TV, newspapers, etc.). So as not to influence the free choice of voters, it is forbidden to publish poll results and forecasts that are related to elections. This was reported by the United States State Department’s Country Report on Human Rights Practices 2005.
