Yekaterina Lobaznyuk is one of the most popular and richest Artistic Gymnast who was born on June 10, 1983 in Fergana, Russia. Lobaznyuk is the second child of a gymnastics coach and a former gymnast. She grew up in Uzbekistan during the turmoil and turbulence that characterized the 1980s. At six years old, her mother took her to Fergana’s gym. This was when she began her career in gymnastics. After the collapse of the USSR in 1990, the Lobaznyuks fled to Tashkent because of violence and riots that had broken out in Fergana Valley. The family tried to join the circus, but it was unsuccessful. Her grandmother, who was living in Russia at that time, offered assistance. The Lobaznyuks settled in Rubtsovsk in southwest Siberia, where they found 170,000 people.
Lobaznyuk fractured her right arm in 1998 after falling off the uneven bars. She missed the Junior European Championships as well as the World Youth Games, which were the biggest junior events of the year. At the Mexican Acapulco Cup, she was able to overcome Viktoria Karpenko, a Ukrainian gymnast.
Sydney, Australia was the site of the 2000 Olympic Games, and the location of the highest point in Lobaznyuk’s career. She was also perhaps the top gymnast on the Olympic team, surpassing Svetlana Khorkina and Elena Zamolodchikova, the best known members of the team at the time. She won a pair of silver medals (on the beam and in the team final) and a bronze on the vault. She did make a few mistakes that probably cost her team a shot at the gold medal in the team final. After Zamolodchikova fell off the balance beam, Lobaznyuk wanted to get a 10.0 SV (start value) so badly that she included a move not originally in her beam routine and promptly fell off the side of the beam. Dianov remarked afterwards, “It was a noble impulse and so it was impossible to rebuke her for it”. In the all-around final, Lobaznyuk stepped out of bounds on her floor routine and misstepped on beam, resulting in a fifth-place result.
At the 2001 Russian Cup, while performing one of her signature Yurchenko vaults, Lobaznyuk landed very hard on the mat and collapsed in pain; she had to be picked up and carried off by one of her coaches. It was revealed later that she had torn the ACL and MCL in her right knee, and surgery would be needed, which would sideline her for the remainder of the year. She had two surgeries because the first one in Moscow, Russia was not performed properly; the second took place in Johannesburg, South Africa during her visit for a rehabilitation stint. The second seemed to go well, and she returned to training in late January 2002.
Lobaznyuk was a member Russia’s national team and attracted attention for her choreographed routines as well as her quirky personality. She won the 1997 all-around title at Charleroi TopGym in Belgium and finished fifth in the all around (with two additional titles each in vault, balance beam, and vault) at the International Junior Tournament Japan. She gained worldwide attention at the meet in Japan with her performance and floor exercise choreographed by “Hava Nagila” to the music.
