Stavrakakis was a Sheffield, UK native. He studied political science at Panteion University in Athens and discourse analysis at Essex University. His MA and PhD degrees were awarded by the University of Essex’s ‘Ideology and Discourse Analysis’ program. Ernesto Laclau was his supervisor for Ernesto’s doctoral thesis titled ‘New Directions In the Theory of Ideology And the Case of Green Ideology.
His research interests include current political theory, with an emphasis on psychoanalytical and poststructuralist approaches, the analysis of ideology in societies of late-modernity (with an emphasis on the study and interpretation of political ecology and populism), and the political aspects of artistic practices and theatre. His most recent research has been on the political and psychological implications of “debt societies” in Southern Europe (especially Greece), and the emerging ideological cleavage among populist and antipopulist discourses in this context. He was the Principal Investigator for the POPULISMUS research program, which was co-funded in part by the European Union. The project’s research focus was on the relationship between populist speech and democracy. It involved various dissemination and research activities, as well as the creation of an International Observatory of Populist Speech.
