Yann LeCun Biography

Yann LeCun is one of the most popular and richest Computer Scientist who was born on July 8, 1960 in Soisy-sous-Montmorency, Île-de-France, France. Yann LeCun was born at Soisy-sous-Montmorency in the suburbs of Paris in 1960. Le Cun was his original name. It was derived from Le Cunff, an old Breton form that meant “nice guy”. He was originally from Guingamp, northern Brittany. In 1983, he was awarded a Diplome d’Ingenieur by the ESIEE Paris and in 1987, he received a PhD in Computer Science at Universite Pierre et Marguerite Curie. During this time, he developed an early version of the back-propagation algorithm for neural networks.

He joined AT&T Labs Research in 1996 as the head of the Image Processing Research Department. This was part of Lawrence Rabiner’s Speech and Image Processing Research Lab. His primary focus was on the DjVu compression technology. Many websites use this technology to distribute scanned documents, including the Internet Archive. Leon Bottou, Vladimir Vapnik were his collaborators at AT&T.

In 2013, he and Yoshua Bengio co-founded the International Conference on Learning Representations, which adopted a post-publication open review process he previously advocated on his website. He was the chair and organizer of the “Learning Workshop” held every year between 1986 and 2012 in Snowbird, Utah. He is a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA. He is the Co-Director of the Learning in Machines and Brain research program (formerly Neural Computation & Adaptive Perception) of CIFAR.

In 2012, he became the founding director of the NYU Center for Data Science. On December 9, 2013, LeCun became the first director of Facebook AI Research in New York City, and stepped down from the NYU-CDS directorship in early 2014.

He joined the Adaptive Systems Research Department of AT&T Bell Laboratories Holmdel (New Jersey), United States in 1988. There he developed a variety of machine learning methods including the biologically inspired Convolutional Neural Networks model of image recognition, the “Optimal Brain Damage” regularization methods and the Graph Transformer Networks method. These methods were used for OCR and handwriting recognition. NCR and other companies used the bank check recognition system he developed to read over 10% of all checks in the US during the late 1990s and early2000s.
