Bratanov, a Bulgarian indoor champion, won gold in the 400 meter men’s race. He set a new indoor record for Bulgaria of 47.79 to beat Hermann Kohler (West Germany’s current champion). Bratanov, who was first to break 50 seconds, set his personal record in the 400m hurdles in Furth, 13 June 1976. Later that summer, he made his Olympic debut in Montreal, running 51.84 heats and 50.11 semi-finals. He qualified for the Olympic final in Montreal, where he finished sixth in 50.

Bratanov was seven times a champion in Bulgaria. He won the 400 m hurdles five times outside (1972, 1973 and 1974), 1978, 1979 and 1979, and twice indoors at over 400 meters (1974, 1975, 1975, 1974 and 1978). Bratanov was eliminated from the 1978 European Championships in Prague. However, he qualified for the Olympic final at the 1980 Summer Olympics. He was the only person to reach the final of the 400m hurdles in Montreal and Moscow. In the Moscow final, he suffered cramps and finished last in 56.35.

Yanko Ivanov Bratanov, (Bulgarian: Ianko Ivanov Bratanov; born 10th June 1952), is a former track and field champion from Bulgaria. He was a finalist at the 1980 and 1976 Olympic Games in the 400m hurdles. He has been a coach in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates since his athletic career.

In 1971, Bratanov set the Bulgarian record for 400m hurdles (51.8). He won the championship in Bulgaria in 1972 and raised the national record to 51.24. He was the national champion again in 1973 and 1974. At the 1974 European Championships Rome, he was eliminated in semi-finals but set a new Bulgarian mark of 50.66. Bratanov was the anchor for the Bulgarian team in the 4×2 laps relay at the European Indoor Championships, Katowice in 1975.

Bratanov retired as an athlete in 1983, but remained active in track and field as a coach. Initially, he coached in Bulgaria, moving to Qatar in 1992; his Qatari pupils included Asian champions Samuel Francis and Femi Ogunode. As of 2015, Bratanov is coaching in Bahrain; he coached Bahrain’s team for the 2014 World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, but was unable to attend personally after being denied a visa.
