Despite the relative unknown of the sport, she became well-known in Brazil after winning a bronze medal at 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the first Latin American woman to win a medal and also the first Latin American woman to do so.

Marques was selected by popular vote to carry the Brazilian flag at the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. After Sandra Pires, she was the second woman to receive the honor. Yane was 23rd in modern pentathlon after poor fencing results. She expressed no regrets about the results, especially considering Marques’ pentathlon performances that helped spread her sport.

Marques arrived at the 2012 Summer Olympics with expectations of medals. He started in 6th place in fencing and jumped to 2nd after swimming. Marques kept that position following show jumping. Marques won the bronze medal, Brazil’s last medal at those Olympics, with a combination of running and shooting. Marques rose to 2nd place in the world rankings after the Games, trailing only Laura Asadauskaite, a gold medallist from Lithuania.

Marques, a native of the Brazilian state Pernambuco’s Sertao, moved to Recife in her 11th year of life so that her older siblings could go to college. A year later, Marques became a swimmer at Clube Nautico Capibaribe where she competed alongside Joanna Maranhao, the future Olympian. Marques’s transition to pentathlon was made in 2003 when she was invited by Pernambuco’s newly established modern pentathlon organization. This competition was part of the new Brazilian confederation’s plans to promote the sport. Alexandre Franca, founder of the confederation, invited Marques to become a pentathlete. Marques became the South American and Brazilian champions just one year after switching to modern pentathlon with Franca as her coach.

Marques qualified for her Olympian debut at 2008 Summer Olympics by winning the gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Marques joined the Brazilian Army the following year to receive the military-only scholarship and training facilities. Marques topped the Brazilian pentathlon rankings of 2010 and was 3rd in the World in 2011. She was a silver medalist in the Pan American Games, and she won three medals at Military World Games.
