Yael Arad is one of the most popular and richest Judoka who was born on May 1, 1967 in Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv District, Israel. Yael Arad (Hebrew called yl Ard born on May 1st 1967) is an Israeli Judoka from Israel. It was her first Israeli to earn the Olympic medal. She is widely acknowledged among Israel’s top athletes, and is widely recognized for her contribution to the introduction of judo to the sporting mainstream.

She was selected as the light-bearing torch during the 1993 Maccabiah Games. She placed second during the 1993 World and European Championships and fifth at the 1995 World Championships.

Arad, who is Jewish, was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. She started taking judo classes at the age of eight and within half a year, ranked second in Israel in her weight class. She later trained with the coach of the men’s judo team. In 1995, Arad married Lior Kahane (son of Israeli basketball coach Rani Kahane).

At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Arad lost to Jung Sung-Sook of Korea, competing for the bronze. She went into the fight sick with a virus and ended up in fifth place.

Arad is the very first Israeli athlete to be awarded an Olympic medal, when she participated in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. She was awarded an Olympic silver medal at half middleweight contest. She was defeated by Catherine Fleury of France. Arad dedicates the award to those who were killed in that massacre in the year 1972. In 1993, she won a gold medal in the European championships. In the world championships that year, she lost in the finals to Gella van de Caveye of Belgium, taking home a silver medal.
