Kathy Yaeji Lee was born on August 6, 1993, in Flushing, Queens as a single mother within the family of a Korean family. As a child, Yaeji moved from New York to Atlanta when she was five and then moved went to South Korea in the third grade. While in South Korea, Yaeji switched between international schools on a regular basis, which led her to make friends on the Internet which is where she was first introduced to music. Yaeji also attended school for a short time in Japan before returning to Korea.
