Dr. Yaacob is active in the community since the age of school and is a member of his work with the Association of Muslim Professionals, Jamiyah, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura as well as the Nature Society (Singapore). At first, he was a tutor volunteer. He was appointed Chairperson of the Council for the Development of Singapore Malay/Muslim Community (Yayasan Mendaki) in March 2002.
In May 2011, in a cabinet rearrangement, Yaacob became Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts. He continues to serve as the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs. Yaacob is on the PAP Central Executive Committee as Vice-Chairman. In April 2015, Dr Yaacob was appointed the Minister in charge of Cyber Security and oversees the Cyber Security Agency (Singapore), an agency formed under the Prime Minister’s Office. He has been re-appointed to serve in this capacity following the September 2015 General Election.
A member of the governing People’s Action Party (PAP), he is previously Minister for Communications and Information, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs and Minister in charge of Cyber Security. A Member of Parliament (MP) since 1997, he was the Minister for Community Development and Sports from 2003 to 2004, as the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources from 2004 to 2011, and as the Minister for the Information, Communications and the Arts from 21 May 2011 to 1 November 2012. He declined not to participate for the Singapore Presidential Elections in 2017.
Yaacob was Parliamentary Secretary and Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. He was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Community Development and Sports in November 2001. On March 2, 2002 Yaacob was appointed the acting Minister of Community Development and Sports and Minister in charge of Muslim Affairs . He was appointed an elected Cabinet member in May 2003.

Yaacob was a student at Tanjong Katong Technical Secondary School which became co-educational during his time at the school. The school graduated him from University of Singapore with an honors diploma in Civil Engineering in the year 1980 and, in 1989, he earned an Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University. He was a postdoctoral researcher in Cornell University. Then he returned to Singapore in the year 1990 and was appointed to his current National University of Singapore faculty in 1991. He was awarded his department’s highest award for teaching excellence in 1994. The professor is on leave at the university as associate professor.
A member of parliament in 1997. He has represented in the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (Jalan Besar GRC) (1997-2011) and the Moulmein Kallang GRC from the time of the general election. Within both GRCs, the he is in charge of his Kolam Ayer ward. In April of 2001, he became the first Mayor of the Central District of Singapore until November 2001.
He became the Minister of Environment and Water Resources in 2004. In 2009, after the Bukit Timah canal burst its banks after a downpour, resulting in parts of Bukit Timah being submerged, Yaacob remarked it was a freak event that “occurs once in 50 years”. The country would go on to experience more than 70 flash floods between the year 2010 and 2013.
