Xie Fuzhan (Chinese: Xie Fu Zhan; born 9 August 1954) is a Chinese politician and economist who is president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In the past, he was his position as the Communist Party Secretary and governor of Henan province. Prior to that as his position as Director for China’s National Bureau of Statistics and the State Council Research Office.

Xie Fuzhan is an eminent economist who has received many prestigious awards. He is a prolific author who has had his work published in a variety of journals and newspapers. His main research areas are macroeconomics, development of the economy and reforming enterprises. He has been involved in a number of major research projects that were conducted in conjunction together with World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme and the Asian Development Bank. He has served as consultant for the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as well as a professor as well as PhD student adviser at his former school, Huazhong University of Science and Technology as well as an adjunct professor in Tsinghua University. In 2007, he was one of three vice- chairmen of the UNESCO Statistical Commission.

Xie was a member of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and is a full member of the 18th and 19th Central Committees.

In March 2018, Xie was appointed the President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

In October of 2006, Xie Fuzhan was appointed commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and replaced Qiu Xiaohua, who was dismissed for corruption. The position lasted until September of 2008. As commissioner , he promoted innovative statistical techniques to improve the quality of data. He was openly against making predictions about China’s economy out of the fear that such forecasts could have an impact on data collection.

Xie Fuzhan was born in Tianmen, Hubei. After graduation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology of Wuhan in the year 1980 He worked as an reporter in The People’s Daily for three years. After that, he went back to university, earning an engineering master’s degree at the Machinery Industry Automation Research Institute in the year 1986. Then, He joined the Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council of China.

Xie spent the majority of the following two decades in the DRC and was a leader or was involved in numerous research projects. Additionally, he traveled to other countries to pursue his research. From 1991 until 1992, Xie was an academic visiting scholar in the department of economics at Princeton University, and then completed an executive course within the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In 2006, he finished an programme for executives at the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge. From 1999 until 2006 Xie was director in charge at the DRC.

In June 2008 Xie was appointed director of the State Council Research Office. In March 2013 he was appointed Deputy Communist Party Secretary of Henan in central China, and was elected Governor by the Henan Provincial Congress in April. On 26 March 2016, he was elevated to Communist Party Secretary of Henan, replacing Guo Gengmao.
