Xiao-Gang Wen is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on November 26, 1961 in Beijing, China. Xiao-Gang Wen (simplified Chinese: Wen Xiao Gang ; traditional Chinese: Wen Xiao Gang ; pinyin: Wen Xiaogang ; born November 26, 1961) is a Chinese-American physicist. He is a Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. His research interests are in condensed matter theories in highly connected electronic systems. In October. 2016 He was awarded his prize, the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize.
He is the writer of a textbook on the field of quantum many-body theory that is called Quantum Field Theory for Many-body Systems: from the Beginning of Sound to an Origin of Light and Electrons (Oxford University Press 2004,).
Wen proposed the concept of topological ordering (1989) as well as quantum order (2002) to explain the new category of material states. This provides a fresh research direction for condensed matter Physics. He discovered that states with topological order have non-trivial boundary excitations. He also created the chiral Luttinger theory of state of the boundary (1990). The boundary states can be used as an ideal conduction channels that can result in device applications of topological phases. He suggested the most basic topological order -Z2 topological order Z2 topological ordering (1990) which later is the topological order of the code toric. He also suggested a distinct kind of topological order: quantum Hall states that are not abelian. They are composed of emergent particles that have non-Abelian statistical properties that extend the well-known Bose as well as Fermi statistics. Non-Abelian particles could permit us to perform quantum computations that are fault- tolerant. Together with Michael Levin, he found that condensations of string networks can create a vast variety of topological orders (2005). In particular, it is the unified source of electrons, photons along with other fundamental particles (2003). It brings together two fundamental phenomena such as the gauge interaction along with Fermi statistics. He emphasized it is not a topological pattern more than the pattern of long-range entanglements. This led to the concept of the symmetry protected topological (SPT) order (short-range states that are entangled with the symmetry) and its explanation by cohomology group in the group symmetry (2011). The concept of SPT order extends the concept of topological insulator to interconnected instances. He also developed an idea for the SU(2) gauge theory for superconductors at high temperatures (1996).
