From 1998 until the year 2004, Gjunkshi was in a variety of positions within various roles in General Staff and the Ministry of Defence. In 1999 the year he became a lieutenant colonel. From 2004 until 2007, he was Albania’s military attache in Turkey. In 2005 the year he was elevated to the rank of colonel. In 2007 Gjunkshi was named commander of the Commando Regiment, an elite section belonging to the Albanian Armed Forces.

Xhemal Gjunkshi (born 30 January 1963) is an ex- Albanian soldier. In 2017, he began his political career and was elected as a Member of the Parliament (MP) of Diber. From August 2011 until the end of November 2013 he worked as Chief of the General staff of the Albanian Armed Forces. He was elected as the deputy of the Democratic Party in June 2017 general elections.
Gjunkshi started his career in the military as a commander at the platoon level and later company level. Gjunkshi became a captain by 1992, and major by 1993. Gjunkshi was appointed commanding officer of the battalion in Peshkopi. He was appointed commander in 1998. Gjunkshi completed his military training in Turkey.
In October 2008, a group of soldiers in the Commando Regiment sent a letter to the government of Albania and the United States Embassy in Tirana reporting corruption within the regiment. The letter alleged that Gjunkshi demanded bribes in exchange for assignments to serve in the International Security Assistance Force or Multi-National Force – Iraq. The alleged bribe values equalled half of the additional pay soldiers would receive as part of their assignments.
