In 2016, Poels won his first one-day race after sprinting to victory from a four-man group in Liege-Bastogne-Liege. This was the first tribute to be erected by Team Sky and for Poels himself.
The team announced the news in September 2014. Team Sky announced that Poels will join them on 1 January 2015. The first time he won for Team Sky came during the 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico in which he was the leader of the team after the departure from Chris Froome. Poels took stage 4 to Castelraimondo by launching an attack at the top of the final climb, as well as an individual climb to get to the final. He climbed to the front of the race, and was seventh overall. He then finished second overall in the Tour of Britain, winning the most difficult mountain stage, which included the climb up Hartside Fell.
