Woodrow Landfair (born Stanley Wood Landfair II on the 9th of November 1982, also known as “Pack”) is an American novelist as well as an NCAA Champion athlete, known for pledging the 2005 College World Series ring, changing his name, and relocating on a motorbike to travel as an worker on an eighty-eight-state odyssey. The trip on a motorcycle is the main subject in the book Land Of The Free (2014).
As a member of the team that won in 2005 for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship team, he earned all varsity letters during all three seasons and was selected as Teammate of the Year by his teammates in his 2004 and 2005 seasons.
From 2007-2008, he published articles as associate editor of Prop. 65 Clearinghouse in San Francisco, then joined the production staff at New York City’s The Public Theater in 2009. With approval from the US State Department, Landfair left New York in 2010 to join an American delegation in Havana, Cuba.
As of May 2007, he had reached thirty-two states, performing oral stories in forty-one cities. He was featured in several newspapers nationwide and on May 8, 2007 appeared on the front page of the Austin American Statesman as part of a two-page spread. On September 23, 2007, Landfair authored and performed a one man show 48 States of Adventure at Washington D.C.’s Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in front of a capacity crowd. The show was recorded as an album, 48 LIVE, which sells on iTunes. On September 24, 2007, the Fox News Channel ran a feature on Landfair, his stories and his travels. Anchor Shepard Smith referred to Landfair as aspiring to become “the next John Steinbeck or Louis L’Amour.”
After sustaining a back injury during marathons, he tore 2 discs on his back during the season of 2005. Not a student-athlete anymore or a recipient of a an award from the Navy He studied creative writing with Zulfikar Ghose. In the process of researching and write a book, the author sold everything he owned, including the National Championship ring–and, with no prior experience riding leaving on a newly bought used motorcycle.

Landfair was raised with the mother of his two siblings living in Springfield, Virginia, and with his father in California at first in Los Angeles, then in San Francisco. Landfair enrolled at the University of Texas in 2001 and was awarded a full academic scholarships from the United States Navy with the desire to become SEAL. He was urged by his fellow Midshipmen to join the team’s baseball game in walk-on training session in October 2002, Landfair earned a spot on the team roster.
