Zulu was later diagnosed with tuberculosis at the age of 1997. Zulu lost four brothers to tuberculosis throughout his lifetime due to limited access to anti-TB medicines which are readily used in many other nations. The death of his brothers as well as his own illness caused Zulu to concentrate his efforts for tuberculosis sufferers and efforts to stop the spread of the disease. He said in the 1990sthat “TB treatment gives patients more time. If my brothers had survived TB they might have lived long enough to access HIV drugs like me. They shouldn’t have died.”

Zulu acknowledged the connection between the status of patients with HIV/AIDS and a diagnosis of tuberculosis. Between 1997 and 2011 Zulu demanded more funding to stop this disease and also TB cases that are directly connected with HIV as well as AIDS. In the past, former South African President Nelson Mandela expressed his admiration for Zulu declaring, “There have been so few TB survivors who have stepped forward to share their stories. We need more advocates like Winstone to tell the world about TB and the effect it has on so many millions of people.”
