Willem Jacobus Eijk was born on June 22, 1953, at Duivendrecht, North Holland, Netherlands. Eijk trained in medicine in the University of Amsterdam and received his degree in the year 1978. Between 1978 and 1979, He was a doctor with a specialization on internal medical issues. He was a priest in the Seminary of Rolduc at Kerkrade. Since 1979, he has combined his theological training with the research of ethical issues in medical practice through Leiden University. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1985, and inducted into the Diocese of Roermond. He then began his work as an assistant curate in the parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Venlo Blerick.
In 2001, Wim Eijk was diagnosed with an intradural hematoma, that he completely recovered from.
On 11 December 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Eijk the Metropolitan Archbishop of Utrecht On 26 January 2008 he was installed in St. Catharine’s Cathedral in Utrecht. He is the 70th successor of Saint Willibrord (658–739) as head of that see.
In May 2008 Pope Benedict appointed Eijk a member of the Congregation for the Clergy.
Eijk was appointed Bishop of Groningen and Leuwarden on July 17, 1999. He was officially ordained a bishop on the 6th of November. The motto he chose was Noli recusare laborem (“Do not resent this work”) which is derived from the final phrase from Martin of Tours. As bishop, he limited the participation of the laity in church services compared to the past practices.

Willem Jacobus “Wim” Eijk (born 22 June 1953) is a Dutch prelate of the Catholic Church as well as being a cardinal since the year 2012. He is archbishop-elect of the metropolitan region of Utrecht since 2007. He was the Bishop of Groningen and Leuwarden from 1999 until 2012. Prior to his clerical position, the doctor he worked for was a doctor and a priest. As a priest, he set medical ethics at the forefront of his studies.
In 1987, he was awarded an MD from The University of Leiden, with an essay on the practice of euthanasia. In 1990, he received an Ph.D. in the field of philosophy from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) with the title the ethical issues of genetic engineering in human beings. Eijk also received his master’s degree as well as a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. In addition, he was a professor of moral theology in the Seminary of Rolduc. In 1997, Eijk taught moral theology at the the pontifical Faculty of Theology in Lugano, Switzerland. From 1997 until 1999, he was an active part of the International Theological Commission.
Pope John Paul II named him a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life on 4 August 2004 and a member of its governing council on 23 March 2005.
