Wilma Tiamzon (21 December 1952) is an Filipino political activist and was arrested until her detention in March 2014, she was detained by Philippine security forces they believed she was an official of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing known as the New People’s Army (NPA).
Tiamzon together with her husband, who is a top leader of the CPP leadership as well as five others were detained at the request of Philippine police in Cebu in 2014 under the administration of Benigno Aquino III; they were discovered through surveillance after relief operations started after Typhoon Haiyan in the year prior. The items they were able to retrieve included ammunition, firearms, and grenades. Tiamzons were wanted on murder charges. Tiamzons were wanted for murder charges due to their alleged involvement in death of 15 civilians whose bodies were found in an unmarked grave in Inopacan, Leyte in 2006. They were freed from detention in August of 2016 on the directive from the President Rodrigo Duterte as they were designated as representatives from the National Democratic Front to the peace talks with the Government of the Philippines to take place at Oslo, Norway. Duterte declared that peace talks were not going to be held in February 2017, and he expected NDF representatives as well as Tiamzons, to Tiamzons to “on their own… return and go back to prison.”
She was detained in July 1973, during the period that followed Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. Her release came in 1974. She was arrested again in the month of October, 1989, on murder, but she was released from the prison at Camp Crame two months later. The Philippine military said that the CPP-NPA had spent P2.5 million to help her escape.
