In 1999, at the close of the year, Rampf returned to Sauber in the role of Technical Director on April 1st, 2000. He was in the same post when Sauber was bought by BMW in 2005. He was also in the position after the company retracted its support in 2009.
He joined Volkswagen Motorsport as technical director in August 2011, overseeing the design of the Polo R WRC.
Rampf is the engineer for Sauber driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen for three years. In 1997 Rampf worked with drivers Nicola Larini, Norberto Fontana and Gianni Morbidelli. After his 1997 campaign, Rampf returned to BMW and was able to lead the motorcycle team in the Dakar Rally. BMW motorcycle driver Richard Sainct would win that race.

Rampf was born in Maria Thalheim, studied Automotive Engineering at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and has been working as an engineer for development at BMW since 1979. From 1989 until 1993 Rampf was employed by BMW throughout South Africa, where he was introduced to Formula One.
The Sauber team was first introduced to Formula One at the South African Grand Prix in 1993. Rampf received an invitation to race, and then a year after that, he signed a contract to be race engineer for team Sauber team.
Rampf left his position at Sauber in April 2010, and was replaced by James Key.
