Long was a star as a player at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was awarded Indiana Mr. Basketball honors in 1967, after scoring 25.6 scores per match. He played his team of Archers towards the State Finals, losing in the semi-finals to the traditional Indiana powerhouse Lafayette Jefferson. As an underclassman He led the Archers to the IHSAA Regional title (the equivalent of the Sweet Sixteen).
Long played in the NCAA basketball tournament in the University of New Mexico under the direction of head coach Bob King. Long was the top scoring player of the Lobos in the years 1969-70 and 1970-71 and averaged 23.9 points per game during each season, and was the top scorer in his team in the Western Athletic Conference with scoring when he was a senior. He scored 1,542 career points and 800 rebounds, scoring an average of the team with 20 points, 10 rebounds and per game. He ranked #10 in Lobo history in scoring points and 4th in rebounding. He was named All-WAC in 1970-71 and 1969-70, as well as Helms All- American in 1970-71.
