Willie James Burton Jr. (born on June 24, 1962) is an American-New Zealand professional player of basketball who played 19 seasons within the New Zealand National Basketball League (NBL). Burton moved to New Zealand in the mid-1980s to play for Palmerston North and became a legend of the league. He was in excellent fitness and still played high-level basketball when he reached 40. He took home six championships in rebounding and is the league’s top rebounder on the boards. He ended in the top ten with 4,244 rebounds in his career, close to 1,500 higher than the next-best individual rebounding score.
Burton ended his NBL career with an 8-time All-Star Five honouree and a six- time rebounding champion. He also was named the Most Excellent Forward back in the year 1989 and, after obtaining New Zealand citizenship in the mid-90s, Burton was named the most outstanding Kiwi forward/center in 1997. To show his versatility in his sport, the player also took home the title of the league’s assist champion in 1999 by averaging 5.6 assists per match. His career-high of 4,244 rebounds is top of the league’s all-time rebounding list.
Burton and his wife Suzanne, a New Zealander, have two sons, Alonzo and Dominique. Alonzo followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Hawke’s Bay Hawks in 2012.
The year 1985 saw Burton made the move into New Zealand and was a part of New Zealand’s Palmerston North Jets of the National Basketball League (NBL). In his debut season, he scored 28.6 points and a league-leading 16.1 rebound per game. He played for Jets Jets in 1986, before becoming a member of the Hawke’s Bay Hawks in 1987. After two seasons playing for the Hawks then he was back in Palmerston North, playing for the team in 1989 and 1990. Then, in 1991, he was a part of New Plymouth and played three seasons with the team before coming back in Hawke’s Bay in 1994 where was he stayed for the next four years. After a hiatus at the end of 1998, he came back the team to Palmerston North for a third time in 1999, and returned to the Hawks only two years after. Burton was forced to retire in 2002, but he came back in 2005, helping the Hawks to make it to the final, which they defeat by Auckland Stars by one point. Burton played in one final campaign in 2006. the Hawks won his very first title an 85-69 victory at the Grand Final, which was played against Auckland. He retired for the second time in the following season, leaving in the NBL in the middle of 19 seasons.

Burton was a baseball player in his youth at his native town Millen, Georgia.
