From 1 June 2017 the division has been responsible for the work of the Erste Group’s Group Sustainability Office, with the aim of establishing sustainability. This includes the concerns that surround diversity and inclusiveness as a fundamental element of the Erste group’s company culture.
On October 1, 2009 Cernko was appointed by Erich Hampel as Chairman of the Board of Directors of UniCredit Bank Austria AG. Robert Zadrazil replaced Cernko in this role on 1 March 2016.

Willibald Cernko began his professional career at the Raiffeisenkasse Oadach- Weisskirchen in 1983. In 1985, he moved to Vienna and began working at Creditanstalt-Bankverein, one of the predecessor banks of Bank Austria. Cernko was the deputy head of corporate customers from 1996 and 1998 prior to being appointed to on the Bank Austria management board in 2000 and was responsible for corporate business of the Bank’s division. A year later after that, he was appointed as a member of the management board in charge of the CEE region of the newly-merged Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG. He was appointed in 2006 was appointed to the HypoVereinsbank AG’s board of management which is accountable to oversee their Private as well as Corporate Customers division. Between between January and September 2009 Cernko was also the post as Executive Vice President of UniCredit Group and served as head of retail in Germany as well as Austria.
Cernko has a wife, Jasminka Stancul who is a concert pianist and they have four children. His son Leonard Cernko was named “Chef of the Year” by Gault- Milau-Osterreich in 2006.
