Vollmann was employed in odd jobs, such as an entry-level position as secretary at an insurance firm, and put aside enough money for a trip for a trip to Afghanistan during the year 1982. While there Vollmann sought to collect details and photos that would be used to determine which candidates were the most deserving for American assistance. He finally stumbled upon an army of mujahideen headed towards the front line. He fought alongside soldiers, who were in combat in their counterparts in the Soviet Union at the time and then he was struck with dysentery and needed to be carried across to the Hindu Kush mountains. The experiences he had on that trip inspired his very first fiction book, An Afghanistan Picture Show or the Story of How I Saved the World, that was not released until 1992.

On November 3, 2003 (after numerous delays) his book, The Rising Up in the same month as Rising Down was published. It’s a 3300-page, extensively illustrated, seven-volume treatise on violence. This book has been nominated by an award called the National Book Critics Circle Award. A single volume condensed version of the book was released at the close of the year by Ecco Press. Vollmann defended the abridgment by explaining, “I did it for the money.” Rising Up as well as Rising Down encompasses the culmination of more than twenty years’ research that he has attempted to create a moral calculus to analyze the causes, effects and the ethics behind violence. Vollmann developed it based on his experiences in reporting from the frontlines of war, such as Cambodia, Somalia, and Iraq.

As of 2007, Vollmann was writing ghost and supernatural stories for a collection to be published by Viking (“Widow’s Weeds” was published in AGNI No. 66 in 2007). He was also working on the fourth and fifth volumes of the Seven Dreams series. In interviews, he has mentioned a book about abortion called The Shame of Our Youth, as well as a study on rape cases in court.
