William Francis Medley (born September 17th 1952) is an American clergyman from the Roman Catholic Church. He was a former priest in the Archdiocese of Louisville and currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro, Kentucky.
Medley was appointed the pastor at the Mother of Good Counsel Church in Louisville in 2005. She was also named pastor of the Transfiguration of our Lord Church in Goshen in 2007. In 2008, the two parishes were joined to create St. Bernadette Church in Prospect in Prospect, with Medley continuing as the pastor. Alongside his pastoral duties Medley was also a member of the College of Consultors, Priests Council Planning Commission, Priests Health Panel, and the Priests’ Personnel Board. He was also vice president for the Bardstown/Nelson County Ministerial Organization and was a member of the Nelson County Human Rights Commission.
In June 2019, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) filed a formal complaint against Medley claiming that while personnel director for the Diocese of Louisville, he facilitated the transfer of a priest credibly accused of sexual misconduct to a parish where children were expected to be fewer in number.
He was appointed administrator in 1988. became the director of St. Benedict Church, St. Charles Borromeo Church and Holy Cross Church, all three of which were amalgamated to create St. Martin de Porres Church in the year 1990. He was appointed head of the Office of Clergy Personnel in 1989. He also served as Rector at St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral (the initial place of worship for Louisville Archdiocese) from 1993 to 2005. William Medley was born in Loretto, Kentucky, to James Werner and Dorothy (nee Hayden) Medley. After completing his studies at St. Thomas Seminary High School, he attended Bellarmine College in Louisville, where he earned the bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and psychology. He graduated with the Master of Divinity degree from the St. Meinrad School of Theology located in St. Meinrad, Indiana. From 1974 until 1978 He was social worker for the Kentucky Department of Human Resources.
On May 22nd 1982, Medley was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, O.P. He was then appointed the associate pastor of St. Pius X Church as well as chaplain at Assumption High School in Louisville until 1985, when he was appointed an associate pastor of The Cathedral of the Assumption.
On December 15, 2009, Medley was appointed the fourth Bishop of Owensboro by Pope Benedict XVI. His episcopal consecration took place on February 10, 2010, at the Owensboro Sports Center. He has selected as his episcopal motto: “Holy Is God’s Name.”
