William Lawrence Webster (born September 17th 1953) is an American politician who was a former politician and the convicted felon of Missouri. Webster served in Missouri’s Missouri House of Representatives and as attorney general of Missouri between 1985 and 1993. After being unsuccessful in winning election for governor during 1992 Webster confessed to embezzlement in felony.

The year 1992 was the time that Webster had been the Republican candidate for governor of Missouri after defeating Roy Blunt and Wendell Bailey in the Republican Primary. The governor’s campaign was marred by allegations of corruption in relation to a state workers ‘ compensation fund which Webster was the attorney general. The scandal was so infamous that Webster was defeated in the general election against Democrat Mel Carnahan by a large margin.

William Lawrence Webster is the son of the late Richard M. Webster, who was a prominent Missouri State Senator, and Janet Webster. Webster was born and raised in Carthage, Missouri and was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School. He attended Missouri Southern State College and the University of Kansas. He received his law degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

Webster is the plaintiff for the Webster v. Reproductive Health Services case before the United States Supreme Court in 1989. The court eventually ruled against Webster who represented Missouri as the State of Missouri.

Lawyers who contributed to Webster obtained substantially larger settlements for their clients than those lawyers who did not contribute. Ultimately, Webster plead guilty to two federal felony charges of conspiracy and embezzlement related to abusing his position as Attorney General by using his state staff and office equipment for political purposes.
