William Marino Guerra (born 24 February 1968 in Detroit, Michigan) is a former professional footballer who played in international football for San Marino as a defender. When he graduated from the nation’s youth squad, he played forty appearances in San Marino’s national team. San Marino national football team Two of them in 1987, before the country joined FIFA and 38 FIFA sanctioned matches in the period between 1990-99 ranking him as the nation’s 10th most- capped player in history. Guerra was also captain of San Marino on five occasions between 1995 between 1995 and 1997. Guerra split his 16-year career with the club between teams of Italy as well as San Marino.
While playing football for a few hours during his time in San Marino and Italy, Guerra was a house painter and decorator. It’s something he continues to do in the present. In 1996, prior to the the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Wales Guerra made a promise to “If we take a point off Wales, then I will paint all [my friends’] houses for free”. But, San Marino lost 5-0 at home and 6-0 at Cardiff.
Guerra made his official debut in the club of San Marino while playing for ASD Tropical Coriano in a 1987 Mediterranean Games 0-0 draw with Lebanon on the 16th of September. The official debut was the FIFA sanctioned loss of 4-0 against Switzerland in the Euro 1992 qualifier on 13 November 1990. Guerra was later to play for San Marino in qualifiers for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1996, 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000. Guerra captained the country at the beginning of the year during the 7-0 defeat at home against Russia on the 7th of June, 1995. He also was captain in the matches against Greece in September as well as the Faroe Islands in October. Guerra was then forced to wait until the end of October to be able to wear the armband again and captain the team when San Marino played Belgium. Guerra’s last game as captain was an 0-6 loss to Belgium in June 1997.

Guerra began his professional career in 1987, at the age of 19, at ASD Tropical Coriano in Italy. In the 1990s, he joined another Italian team Real Montecchio. He played for three seasons at Real Montecchio before leaving Real Montecchio in the year 1993, to sign with San Marino Calcio, a club located within Serravalle, San Marino, however, they play within San Marino’s Italian divisions. After two league seasons at San Marino, the defender was signed to Juvenes/Dogana between 1994 and 1995. He was part of 17 matches in his first season with Juvenes/Dogana. However, he was forced to leave to join San Marino Calcio at the close in the campaign. After spending the 1995-96 season in San Marino, Guerra rejoined Juvenes/Dogana which he played for until the end of 1998-99 season. In 2000-01, he moved to Pennarossa Chiesanuova, another San Marino club. Guerra continued to play for the remainder of his career at Pennarossa before retiring in 2004 at age 36.
In a rare event, Guerra appeared for San Marino’s senior side prior to making his debut for the under-21 team. Guerra played his first match for the team’s youth with a 5-0 defeat to Switzerland on June 6, 1989 during the 90 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship qualifying game. Guerra was a part of every one of San Marino’s matches in the tournament. His last appearance with the under-21s was in an 2-0 loss against Italy on November 29, 1989.
His last game for San Marino was the 9–0 loss to Spain in a UEFA Euro 2000 qualifier on 4 June 1999. Of Guerra’s 40 international appearances, San Marino failed to win any and drew just two.
