- Her mom, Esther Schneberg, was born in East New York (Brooklyn) in the year 1920. Both parents were first-generation Americans. Ben’s parents came from Austria and Esther’s father was born in Romania while her mother originally from Austria. Ben was a middle school teacher . He later became a law librarian employed in Wall Street for Berlack, Israels & Lieberman. For more than a quarter of a century, Esther was an High school English educator for Thomas Jefferson High School, an inner-city school. She worked as an adjunct teacher while Willa was a student, and she became permanent English teacher. Esther was eventually appointed the director of College Discovery, an affirmative action program that aimed to help students of color get into colleges. A lot people who were her students were among the first in their families to be admitted to colleges and some were admitted to Ivy League schools.
After returning to the United States in the year 1980, Willa studied Gestalt therapy at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. From 1981 to 1983 she was in graduate school in The University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she earned a master of social science (MSSW).
She worked in Zefat, Israel from 1987-88 as part of Sherut La’am (Service to the People), teaching art therapy to both at-risk children and severely developmentally disabled young men. While in Israel, she conducted poetry workshops for English-speaking Israelis. Her collection, In the Margins of the World, was inspired by both her living in Israel and living in Knoxville.
Willa worked for the United Nations Transitional Authority in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 1992-93. As a District Electoral Supervisor she set up voting registration sites, and later she initiated a new post, Medical Liaison Officer. As the Medical Liaison Officer, she briefed new UN Volunteers on tropical diseases and vaccinations, offered follow-up to United Nations Volunteer tropical disease patients in the field hospital, managed domestic and international emergency medical evacuations, attended to the administrative needs of the UNV physicians stationed in the countryside, and provided counseling to UN personnel. Her collection, Storytelling in Cambodia, is based in large part on her time spent in Cambodia.
The year 1975 was the time Willa made the move to the Boston region, where she pursued a degree in ceramics in Boston University’s program in artisanry for professionals in the field of crafts. In 1979, during her time in Cambridge/Somerville, her first collection of poetry, Box Poems, was published by Alice James Books, a non-profit poetry press started by five women and two men, who felt there needed to be a press with an emphasis on publishing literature written by women. Alice James Books marked its 40th anniversary in 2014.

Willa Hope Schneberg (born May 21 1952 from Brooklyn, New York) is a famous American poet from the United States. Her work has been published in four poetry collections that are full length which include in The Margins Of The World (Plain View Press) which was the which was the winner the 2002 Oregon Book Award. the 2002 Oregon Book Award; Box Poems (Alice James Books) Storytelling In Cambodia (Calyx Books) as well as Reending the Garment (Mudfish/Box Turtle Press). The chapbook of letterpress, The Books of Esther was published in conjunction with her multidisciplinary exhibition in The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.
Willa was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in 1969. She attended several institutions that included Binghamton University, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and Empire State College, where she graduated in 1973 with an award in fine art and creative writing. While an undergraduate student, she took classes in pottery at Tulane University in New Orleans as well as Greenwich House in New York City.
In 1980, she was an artist-in-residence for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) at American military bases in the Far East. For six months, she worked in the Philippines, Korea, Japan, and Okinawa, teaching poetry and clay sculpture workshops to students in kindergarten through community college.
