In Walla Walla, Washington, Brandenburg began to ski at the age of 11 months old, and began racing at age 7 in Ski Bluewood near Dayton. His family relocated to Spokane when he was a child and then competed for his Spokane Ski Racing Association on Mt. Spokane and later on Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint in the nearby region of northern Idaho. A 2005 student at Mead High School in Spokane He also played in the high school football league for the Panthers and had an unspecified time as a quarterback.
Brandenburg was appointed for the U.S. development team in May of 2006. In the 2007 U.S. Alpine Championships in April, he finished 2nd in the giant slalom the giant slalom in Alyeska and was that was won by Ted Ligety. One day prior, Brandenburg was named U.S. junior alpine ski racer of the year by Ski Racing magazine.
He won the combined event at the 2013 U.S. Alpine Championships at Squaw Valley.
