Whitney Terrell (born October 3 1967) is a famous American writer and teacher who hails from Kansas City, Missouri. Terrell has written three novels, and his work has been published in Harper’s Magazine, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, as well as other outlets.

in 2005 Terrell wrote his sequel, The King of Kings County. The book explored the connection between race and real estate within Kansas City, tracing the story of a frenzied developer who makes use of covenants of race to construct an unwelcome suburban empire. The book was awarded the William Rockhill Nelson award and was named the best title of 2005 in The Christian Science Monitor.

In 2006, Terrell was named to a list of best writers under 40 by a panel of National Book Critics Circle Award members.

Terrell was the Hodder Fellow at Princeton University for 2008–2009 and a visiting lecturer in 2011. He was the New Letters Writer-in-Residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 2004 to 2014. In 2014, he became an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at UMKC.

The first novel he wrote, The Huntsman, was released in 2001. The story is about an untold story of a younger African American who elbows his way into Kansas City’s white high-class society, while seeking answers about his family’s history. The New York Times chose it as a noteworthy book in 2001. The Kansas City Star and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch selected the book as one of the top books of 2001.

Whitney Terrell was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and went to the high school of The Pembroke Hill School. He received a bachelor’s diploma in English literature from Princeton University in 1991. The year 1992 saw Terrell relocated to Iowa City where he finished an MFA through the Iowa Writers Workshop. While studying at Iowa’s University of Iowa, Terrell worked with James Alan McPherson who sparked his desire to write on race and racism within Kansas City, which is the main theme of Terrell’s two novels.

After completing his master’s degree, Terrell worked as a fact-checker at The New York Observer. From 1996 to 2001 Terrell worked as a teacher his classes at Rockhurst University in Kansas City and was appointed The Writer In Residence from 2000 until 2003.

In 2006 and 2010, Terrell embedded with the U.S. Army in Iraq. He covered the war for The Washington Post Magazine, Slate and NPR.
